Many parents are more familiar with the previous A* to G grading system. While there is no exact one-to-one conversion between the two scales, the comparisons below are the closest recognised equivalents.
Grade 4 is considered a standard pass and is the minimum requirement for many employers, apprenticeships and further education providers. Grade 5 is known as a strong pass and is often preferred by sixth forms for A Level study, although individual entry requirements vary between schools and colleges.
Grade boundaries are not fixed before examinations take place. Once exam papers have been marked, awarding organisations set grade boundaries based on the overall difficulty of that year's papers and the performance of students nationally. This ensures that grades remain consistent from one year to the next, even if individual exam papers vary in difficulty.
GCSEs are typically studied over Years 10 and 11, with examinations taking place at the end of Year 11. Most students study between eight and ten subjects, including the compulsory core of English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and Science, alongside GCSE options chosen at the end of Year 9. The grades achieved at GCSE play an important role in determining sixth form and college entry, future subject choices and progression to higher education.
Grade 4 is considered a standard pass, while Grade 5 is recognised as a strong pass and is often preferred for A Level entry.
English Language, Mathematics and Science form the core of most GCSE programmes in England.
Students who do not achieve a Grade 4 in English Language or Mathematics are normally required to continue studying these subjects after Year 11.
GCSE content is taught across two academic years, while grade boundaries are set after each examination series.
Most schools teach the majority of GCSE content during Year 10 before shifting the focus towards revision, exam practice and mock examinations in Year 11.
