Understanding A Level grades

A Levels are graded from A* to E, with U indicating an unclassified result. The grades achieved determine both UCAS Tariff points and, for many students, whether they meet the conditions of their university offers. Understanding how A Levels are graded helps students set realistic academic targets throughout Years 12 and 13.

How A Level grades are awarded

A Level grades are awarded using grade boundaries set by each exam board after every examination series. This ensures the same standard of attainment is maintained each year, even though individual exam papers may vary slightly in difficulty.

What an A means

An A* recognises exceptional performance and is awarded only to students who achieve the highest standard in their examinations. While the precise requirements vary slightly between exam boards, an A* reflects consistently outstanding understanding and application of the subject.

Typical University Offers

University entry requirements vary depending on the institution and course. The examples below illustrate the types of offers commonly seen across UK higher education.

A*A*A

Oxford, Cambridge and the UK's most competitive degree programmes

AAA

Russell Group universities and other highly selective courses

AAB

Competitive university courses across a wide range of subjects

ABB

Many respected universities, including some Russell Group courses

BBC

Broad range of undergraduate degree programmes across the UK

How grade boundaries are set

Grade boundaries are determined after each examination series once all exam papers have been marked. If a paper proves more demanding than expected, boundaries may be lower, while an easier paper may result in higher boundaries. This process helps ensure that the same standard of performance receives the same grade each year, regardless of slight differences in exam difficulty.

Understanding A Levels

  • Year 12 and 13

Two-year qualifications completed with final examinations at the end of Year 13.

  • Graded A to E*

A* is the highest grade, while U indicates an unclassified result.

  • Typically three subjects

Most students study three A Levels, although some choose four depending on their university ambitions.

  • University entry

Results determine whether students meet the conditions of their university offers.

  • Exam board specific

Qualifications are assessed by exam boards such as AQA, Edexcel and OCR, each with its own specification and examination papers.

A Levels are studied throughout Years 12 and 13, with final examinations usually taking place in May and June of Year 13. Compared with GCSEs, students are expected to study subjects in much greater depth, apply their knowledge to unfamiliar situations and demonstrate stronger analytical, evaluative and essay-writing skills.

Unlike GCSEs, A Level results often determine whether students secure their first-choice university place. Most universities make conditional offers based on predicted grades, meaning consistent academic progress throughout sixth form is just as important as performance in the final examinations.

The choices students make during sixth form, from selecting the right subjects to maintaining steady progress over two years, can have a lasting impact on university admissions and future career opportunities. Building strong foundations from the beginning of Year 12 provides more time to consolidate knowledge, develop exam technique and approach Year 13 with confidence.

The right sixth form support can make all the difference

Whether your goal is meeting a university offer, improving predicted grades or securing an A*, we'll match you with an experienced A Level tutor who understands your subject, exam board and academic ambitions.
